Football in Spain

The national sport Football ( fĂştbol), is Spain’s national sport and the country’s most important participant and spectator sport. Spanish football fans are among the most dedicated and fervent in Europe. Spanish football is dominated by arch rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, with few other teams getting a look in. Other top teams include Sevilla ,Valencia (winners of the Spanish League and Champions’ League in 2004), Deportivo La Coruña and Real Sociedad. Every town in Spain has a football pitch and team. Spanish children learn to play football almost as soon as they can walk, with the most promising players being snapped up by the major clubs and coached from an early age in football schools. Not surprisingly, Spain has many sports newspapers devoted almost exclusively to football, where every aspect of the players’ public and private lives are analysed. Football in Spain, like in other countries, is undoubtedly the national game .

Spain’s La Liga is regarded in many circles as the best in the world but probably also the toughest European league to manage in The oldest football club in Spain is Huelva Recreation Club but the two most famous clubs are undoubtedly Barcelona and Real Madrid. Football in Spain is a big deal and the stadiums, which constitute major tourist sites in both cities, certainly reflect this passion; the Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona has a capacity of 100,000 while the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid has a capacity of close to 90,000 and both are amongst the largest in the world. Visitors to the cities should certainly consider a tour of the stadiums for a chance to see just how big they are. Both also offer excellent museums offering insight into the two clubs glittering.. In order to purchase a ticket for a match your best bet is to buy them before hand. You can wait until the day, but you are likely to end up paying higherprices for them. For tourists, the only way to get them is to go to the stadium itself a week before to purchase them. Tickets in Spain aren’t very cheap. Often prices start at around €20.00 and increase when the places get better. It is surprising to see that Real Madrid tickets and Barcelona tickets start at a lower price (€16.00) than for example the second division club Rayo Vallecano (€20.00).
