Why should People use Internet Phones?

A what phone?

An internet phone is similar to an ordinary phone, in the way that it looks and acts. However, unlike a traditional phone, it connects to the internet, sending your voice over the World Wide Web. Internet phones operate through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which makes traditional landline phones redundant, along with the need for phone jacks and traditional phone wiring, as internet phones only need a broadband internet service and a cable, or a DSL modem.

Save some money

By switching your phone service and getting an internet phone you will more than likely save yourself quite a bit of money. This is particularly true if you have friends or family who live far away, as you will be able to enjoy unlimited long distance calling.
Will it work for me?

Providing you have a high speed broadband internet connection then you should be able to use your internet phone as you would use your main home phone.

The disadvantage

Due to the fact that making phone calls via the internet does not use any local telephone wires there are a few drawbacks to this service that you may want to consider.

An internet phone will require a live internet connection, so therefore if the connection is lost then your internet phone service will not work. Again, the internet modem or router will require power, so if the power goes out then your internet phone will also be down. For these reasons it would be advisable not to use your internet phone as the only option available at you house, particularly if you live in an area which deals with frequent power outages or has problems with internet service reliability. That said, in this day and age most of us have mobile phones which are quite reliable, so it may not prove such as problem.

The advantage

However, taking into account the need for stable internet services and power supply, switching from a traditional land line to an internet phone is a pretty money savvy move. You can get relatively cheap unlimited local and long distance plans, which you can pay for annually or monthly, and they often work out far cheaper than the land line alternative. So if you have a lot of friends or family or even business overseas then this would certainly make sense.

A solution

Many internet phone service plans come with some free calling features, which can be handy in situations when your VoIP service is down because of internet or power failure. All of the best providers will provide you with a free call forwarding hunting feature, this means that you can have your calls routed to other numbers (such as your mobile phone) if there is not an answer at the main internet phone. This means that you won’t miss any calls even if your internet phone is temporarily down.

And finally…

In this day and age the quality of internet phone service is just as good, if not better, than traditional land line service, though this does largely boil down to your VoIP provider. Make sure you choose an internet phone service provider that has a large amount of customers, this should indicate a good reputation.
